Syntagma Square

At a distance of just 300 meters from the Elia Ermou Athens Hotel is the Hellenic Parliament. Following Ermou Street you will reach Syntagma Square by the Syntagma Metro Station and just across the road you will find the Greek Parliament. The building was built in 1843 as the residence of King Otto. In front of the House of Parliament is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, dedicated to all those who lost their lives defending Greece. A very interesting point of reference is the changing of the Presidential Guard, which takes place every hour and on Sunday morning after hoisting and lowering the flag on the Acropolis, the parade to the Monument and the official changing of the guard takes place, which every visitor should see because it is so impressive. The Presidential Guard, otherwise known as Evzones, guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, dressed in a fustanella (traditional pleated skirt) and tsarouchia (type of traditional shoe), the traditional uniform of the nineteenth century.
